Metro Exodus is a first-person shooter video game developed by 4A Games and published by Deep Silver. It is the third installment in the Metro video game series based on Dmitry Glukhovsky’s novels. A sequel to Metro: Last Light and the book Metro 2035, the game follows protagonist Arytom and his crew, as they flees the Moscow Metro and sets off on an intercontinental journey with his allies to the far east, on a locomotive called the Aurora. The story takes place over the course of one year, bringing Arytom to various locations such as the Caspian Sea and the Volga River. The game improves on various gameplay mechanics of Last Light, and features both linear levels like previous Metro games, and several miniature open world locations.

Metro Exodus

Development of the game started in 2014 by a team of around 150 people based in both Kyiv and Malta. The main objective of the studio for Exodus was to combine the core gameplay pillars of the Metro series with elements from S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl (2007), which prioritizes emergent gameplay and features large, explorable space. While the team experimented with open world gameplay, the team avoided including mission markers to the game in order to facilitate players to explore naturally. 4A once again collaborated with Glukhovsky for the game’s story and narrative. The story of Exodus was said to be more personal, forgoing supernatural elements found in previous games for a more grounded story.

Metro Exodus

Announced in 2017, Metro Exodus was released in 2019 for PlayStation 4, Windows PC and Xbox One. An Enhanced version of the game was released for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X and Series S in 2021. The game received generally favorable reviews from critics, with praise for its visuals, game design and story. However, the game was criticized for its voice acting and technical issues at launch. It was a commercial success for Deep Silver, selling more than 8.5 million units by March 2023. Two story expansions, titled The Two Colonels and Sam’s Story, both of which feature a new playable character, were released in August 2019 and February 2020 respectively. A sequel is currently in development.
